Abinger Hatch, Abinger Hammer

filler
Description: The fact that this venue is pretty much in the middle of nowhere is both a plus and a minus. On the positive it gives it a quiet and rural atmosphere, on the negative it can be hard to find and takes a while to get there. On the right hand side is a long L-shaped brick fronted bar, with a thick wooden top, still with the tree curves. The ceiling has stained oak beams and uprights and there are plenty of old-fashioned kitchen type tables and chairs. It has small windows with dark red curtains, which can make it dark inside, though this can be cosy too. The walls are decorated with art prints, maps, mirrors, and photos of bygone sporting heroes. The floors in the front part of the bar are bare boards, there is a step down on the corner to a flagstone area with a large real fireplace. On the other side is a large dining room, complete with fake gas fire, almost real climbing plants, high chairs for young diners, and a piano. Beers on offer include Fosters, Kronenbourg 1664, San Miquel, Strongbow, Guinness, London Pride, and a selection of Ringwood real ales.

Albion, East Molesey

filler
Description: First opened in 1830, this was one of the first beerhouses to open under the terms of a new law. It is a one room venue, set in the narrow streets across the road from Hampton Court railway station, and is a little oasis. It underwent a major refit in April 2006, so its hard to tell what it was like before, but the current decor is very homely. Though it has the all too familiar magnolia ceilings and black beams, the walls have a number of different styles that all seem to work together. There are two large fireplaces, one at either end, and backlit alcoves with some objet d'art in one corner, and even an old grandfather clock. The U-shaped wooden bar has a few stools and there's a couple of high continental style tables. The rest of the seating is provided by a multitude of leather armchairs and sofas, and upholstered benches. Entertainment is provided by 2 large screen LCD TVs and a fruit machine. Sadly this venue no longer has live music.

Alley Bar, Guildford

Description: Formerly Fahrenheit55, this pint-sized venue is in the centre of Guildford, but up a narrow alley. The name, for those of you who either failed your "O" level chemistry, or have been on the wagon, refers to the perfect temperature to serve wine. It has multi-coloured walls and ceilings, with painted glass and print artworks. The small square terracota tiles on the floor in the main bar area, give it a mediteranian feel. Ground floor seating is provided by a couple of large sofas and poofs and high stools at the bar. There are more tables and and high stools on half of the mezzanine floor, reached by a bare pinewood staircase, with a green and red art installation made from padded bar stool seats. Beers on offer include Fosters, John Smith's, Kronenbourg Blanc, San Miguel and Guinness. Bottled beers such as Corona and Strongbow cider. They have nuts and some very tasty if expensive gourmet crisps. The only other entertainment apart from the wonderful live music is a computerised quiz/games machine. Theres a ciguarette machine too, but its life expectancy is hopefully limited. Most of the clientelle seem to be under 40.

Astolat, Guildford

filler
Description: The name comes from the town in Arthurian legend, home of Elaine, and often associated with Guildford. This medium-sized venue has recently been refurbished and is now run by Mike. It has plain wooden tables and chairs. These are decorated with art prints, old photos, and posters advertising forthcoming events. The ceiling in the main bar is painted wood cut with inch and a half parallel grooves and the large air-conditioning units, now found in many pubs. The large number of picture windows at the front where there's a patio and along one side would let in vast amounts of sunshine when the venetian blinds are opened. Beers on offer include Carling, Coors, Stella Artois as well as Guinness, John Smith's and traditional Butcombe bitter. The bottled beers include Peroni and Corona. Also the usual selection of alcopops, mixers and spirits. Entertainment is provided by a jukebox, fruit and quiz machines, a pool table, a fuseball table, dart board and board games.
